How to learn to ski in a day

Let us talk you through the essentials when it comes to mastering the art of skiing in one day.

Make sure you’ve got the right gear

Before you hit the slopes, it is super important that you’ve got the right gear. We’ve got all sorts of equipment that you can rent when you arrive to make sure you’re fully prepared. All our activities include the equipment you need so when it comes to skis, snowboards, boots, ski poles, sledges, and helmets, we have everything you need for your day of learning.

Here’s a quick overview of essential skiing gear in case you’re not sure what to expect:

  • Skis: Your skis should be the right length for your height and skill level. Generally, beginners benefit from shorter skis as this makes them more maneuverable. We’d be able to help find the right skis for you to begin your journey on the slopes.
  • Boots: It’s so important to have comfortable, properly fitted boots as after all, you’ll need that support and a good connection to your skis!
  • Poles: Poles are crucial for balance and stability. Poles should be checked to make sure they are the correct length and have grips that feel comfortable to you.
  • Helmets: Safety always comes first! You should always wear a helmet, indoor or outdoor, to protect your head from potential falls.
  • Clothing: Make sure to dress in layers to stay warm and dry. If you’re outdoors particularly, don't forget a waterproof jacket, gloves, and goggles to protect against the elements.

Skiing basics

Now you’re all kitted out, it’s time to get cracking on the snow. At The Snow Centre, our expert instructors will guide you through the basics of skiing, including:

Balancing act

Learning how to balance your skis is pretty much the first step. It's all about distributing your weight evenly between both legs. Once you’ve mastered this, you’re on the right track.

The snow plough

This is your go-to technique for slowing down and controlling your speed. Learning how to form a V shape with your skis helps to create resistance against the snow.

Turning

Master the art of making smooth turns by gently shifting your weight from side to side. You should look to start with wide turns and gradually work your way to sharper ones.

Stopping

You'll need to know how to stop safely. The snow plough technique comes in handy here too.

Getting Up

Falling is part of learning, so don't worry if it happens. We'll teach you how to get up gracefully and continue skiing.

Practice makes perfect

The key to mastering skiing in a day is practice, practice, practice. Here at The Snow Centre, we offer various activities and lessons tailored to different skill levels.

We offer adult ski lessons in a variety of levels, from level 1 (never skied before) to level 6 (experienced and ready to develop your skills), so rest assured that we’ve quite literally got something for everyone.

You can slowly start on the beginner lessons and gradually progress to more challenging lessons as you gain confidence. Remember, it's okay to take breaks and rest when needed.
