Did you know skiing and snowboarding is a pretty social activity? The slopes are a place to have fun and progess your skills with old friends, and meet new ones too!
In mountain ski resorts, chalet stays, group ski lessons, chair lift rides, Après sessions and sunny days in the freestyle park are all great opportunities to pick up some new-found snow buddies, but UK slopes offer just as many, if not more social opportunities to meet new friends.
With indoor snow centres and dry slopes providing skiing and snowboarding Lift Passes and Lessons all year round, many UK facilities have become a hub for socialising on and off the snow. Complete beginners, park pros, racers, adults and kids can all find a suitable snowsports community at a UK slope.
The ski and snowboard community are generally a friendly welcoming bunch, and contrary to the ski and snowboard rivalry myths, you’ll find skiers and snowboarders lapping together, seasoned park rats cheering on youngsters, and mums and dads enjoying the same snow fun as their kids. It seems, on the slopes the only thing you need to share is a love for sliding on snow, but there will be some sessions more suited to you than others.
Here’s just a few ways you can get on-board with a social snowsports group or community that’s right for you at The Snow Centre Hemel Hempstead.
Social skiing & snowboarding at The Snow Centre
Are you over 17, and a female, who has never skied or snowboarded before or you’ve been hitting the slopes for years on 1 plank or two, and you’re free on Monday or Wednesday Mornings? If so, Ladies Morning Ski or Snowboard Lessons or Coaching Sessions at The Snow Centre could be for you.
Whatever their Snowsports ability, ladies have been hitting the slopes together for 2 hours on Monday and Wednesday mornings, before enjoying complimentary tea and coffee and a good natter in The Lodge Bar & Kitchen for years. There’s the same friendly faces each week, plus a continuous flow of new ones, as the number of ladies that ski and board keeps on growing.
Are you an intermediate, advanced or Main Slope ready skier or snowboarder who likes the sound of quieter slopes, free coaching and a social ski or snowboard with friends before work, the school run or whatever you have planned for that day.
Every Tuesday Morning, 7am – 10am, both a Ski & Snowboard Coach join Earlybird Lift Pass holders on the Main Slope to provide those all-important hints & tips. And over the years the session has developed into a pretty social occasion, with many skiers and snowboarders trying their first freestyle tricks, race drills and more, with the help of The Snow Centre’s coaches and other friendly guests on the snow.
If you’re an intermediate, advanced or Main Slope ready skier or snowboarder looking for some mischief, progression and some great fun with fellow snow lovers, Tuesday Evening Lift Pass Sessions are for you!
Complete with free hints and tips from The Snow Centre’s coaches, Tuesday evenings will have you meeting new people, trying new on-snow drills on the centre’s 160m Main Slope and socialising with skiers and snowboarders alike. Hit the slopes from 7pm - 10pm with The Snow Centre’s great value 3 Hour Lift Passes and enjoy 3 hours skiing or snowboarding for the price of 2, with free coaching available from 8pm.
Kids love to meet new friends on the slopes too! Has your youngster already progressed through the levels on The Snow Centre’s Junior Group or Private Ski or Snowboard Lessons? Are they ready for regular coaching in a club style environment?
If skiing at speed sounds like their thing then the SnowStars Academy at The Snow Centre could be for them. This weekly junior ski club is for all juniors aged 4-16 years who are able to ski in control from the top of the centre’s Main Slope. The Snow Centre's SnowStars sessions aim to continue your junior’s growth, skill development and technical skills through regular social coaching sessions, that ensure everyone reaches their full potential. Available Saturday and Sunday mornings, 8am - 10am.
Alternatively, whether they’re a skier or snowboarder if your youngster has reached that level, where leaving the ground is starting to sound exciting, The Snow Centre’s Freestyle Academy might be a better match. If they’re confident completing controlled short and long turns, and now they want to progress their skills to freestyle riding with, or without features—get them involved with the Freestyle Academy on Thursday and Friday evenings or Saturday and Sunday Mornings.
Are you a boy or girl, adult or junior over the age of 7, with intermediate or advanced ski or snowboard skills? Great, because The Snow Centre’s Freestyle Academy isn’t just for kids. The adult and junior Freestyle Academies at The Snow Centre offer coaching to varied ages and freestyle abilities, because you’re never too old to learn tricks on your skis or snowboard.
At The Snow Centre there’s a range of levels for you to join in, ranging from flatland freestyle tricks, to small ride on features, through to advanced tricks using small and large features. There really is something for everyone on Thursday and Friday evenings, and you’re sure to meet others looking to progress their skills just like you are!
Have you already dabbled in a little freestyle or landed a few flatland or park tricks on your ski or snowboard holiday? Whether you’re an adult or junior, boy or girl, perhaps it’s time to start hitting The Snow Centre’s Freestyle Park and meeting other adrenalin fuelled snowsports lovers?
Are you looking to connect with other snowsports fans before you hit the slopes? Many of The Snow Centre’s sessions have community Facebook groups, where you can arrange a visit to the slopes with others. Come along to your chosen social session and then request to join one of these groups to arrange future social lift pass visits, Tuesday Evening Lift Passes, Tuesday Morning Earlybird, Freestyle Sessions, and Freestyle Academy.
Remember you can always keep up to date with the Hemel Hempstead Snowsports communities’ news and events on The Snow Centre’s Facebook Page, but you can also join external groups who visit The Snow Centre and other slopes together on a regular basis. Check out Billy Snow Mates for more information.
