While the UK overflows with autumn leaves and your visits to indoor skiing and snowboarding centres become more frequent, there are mountain resorts opening across the globe as early as October! And many of these resorts are well into the thick of their snowfalls!
France - Tignes
The season in Tignes doesn’t really get going until the main ski area, ‘The Espace Killy’ opens at the end of November, but if you’re really keen to get on the snow, Tignes glacier ‘Grande Motte’ is open from 3rd October 2015.
The Grande Motte glacier sits at 3000 and 3500 metres and is easily accessible by the funicular in seven minutes from the centre of Tignes at 2100 metres.
It offers 20 kilometres of green to black slopes with 12 lifts. Obviously, the better the snowfall that year the more lifts in operation!

Austria - Solden
Austria is famous for it’s early skiing in a choice of resorts! With guaranteed snow from October through to May, the Austrian resort, Solden offers a high alpine location and 2 glaciers, making it a great destination for early season skiers and snowboarders. Plus Solden has artificial snow making on 67% of the slopes!
Solden’s glacier ski lifts plan to be open by the end of September each year, with the number of lifts operating depending on snowfall and the weather each day.
You will have to wait until the middle of November for the main winter ski areas to open, but with 33 state-of-the-art ski lifts and gondolas across the resort and 10 of these on the glaciers, there will still be plenty to ski or snowboard in October.
